Title
Line Operations Simulation Development Tools
Abstract
Line Operations Simulation (LOS) provides the most effective platform for the aviation training currently available. LOS development is a challenging task for airline training departments. This chapter focuses on areas where the process can be made more efficient. It discusses the process of LOS development and illustrates how specific tools can be used to supplement the development process. It provides a brief introduction on flight training, and more specifically, concerns the use of LOS to accomplish flight training goals. LOS-based programs are focused on one of two things, training or evaluation. Depending on the objective of training, LOFT and SPOT both can provide beneficial training outcomes. Another similar application of LOS is through performance evaluation. LOEs assess pilot proficiency on targeted skills deemed relevant to overall flight safety. In execution, LOE is very similar to LOFT. The LOS development process is described in a number of ways; these are the identification of training objectives, scenario building, and assessment. Taking into account the developmental challenges associated with LOS, the only way to ensure that this effective method of training and evaluation remains viable is to utilize tools to help offset the monetary and time constraints currently in place. © 2010 Elsevier Inc.
