Abstract
George Armstrong Custer emerged from the war a famous Union hero. The Custers were newlyweds during the war and were only beginning to adjust to their new status and relationship when George's star began to rise. As the "Boy General", he won the strong affection of his men in both the Michigan Brigade and the Third Division. His fame was a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it was the crucial element that won him Elizabeth Bacon. On the other hand, his continuing military exploits caused intense anxiety and worry to his young bride. The Custer marriage was a passionate one, but privately there were signs of strife. After the war, his ambition was not satiated nor was his love of war fulfilled. On June 25, 1876, George was killed at the Battle of Little Bighorn.
