Title
Walter Rodney And The Politics Of The Haitian Ruling Class: Rethinking The State In Haiti
Abstract
The contradictions of the state in Haiti based on an application of Walter Rodney's critique of the African state and its leadership is reconceptualized. A framework is developed for understanding the manner in which the state in Haiti evolved along a neocolonial trajectory. The centralization of state force under the auspices of the Haitian ruling class is explored and the implications of Rodney's frame of reference for the contemporary prospects for an egalitarian and democratic transformation in Haiti are defined. By placing the current state of economic and political affairs in Haiti in this context, it becomes apparent that the demise of Aristide was an extension of the persistence of a particular vision of Haitian political leadership. Rodney highlighted a need to recognize that fear and recognize the fact that the arguments made appear to be rational or derived from the intellect.
