Abstract

Selective mutism (SM) is both a psychological disorder and a vexing behavior. Considered a rare childhood disorder, SM is defined by a lack of speech/refusal to speak in settings where speaking is socially expected and individuals, other than immediate family members, are present. Yet, in the presence of parents and siblings, children with SM speak normally and freely. In the diagnostic schema, SM is a distinct diagnostic condition. Yet it rarely exists as a sole diagnosis. In this chapter, we will examine the psychopathology, etiology, assessment, and treatment of SM. We will highlight what is currently known about this condition as well as areas for future research.
