Title

Update Of The Dod M&Amp;S Glossary

Abstract

Under cognizance and participation from the DoD's Modeling and Simulation Coordination Office (M&S CO), the authors have analyzed, revised and are updating the 1998 version of the DoD Modeling and Simulation (M&S) Glossary (DoD 5000.59-M). The DoD M&S Glossary is a guide to relevant terminology including common acronyms across all human centered M&S application areas. We define human centered M&S as simulations with a human in the loop and/or one that models human activity and behavior. Human centered M&S is distinguished from science and process based simulations where human intervention and modeling does not occur. The terminology presented in the document is composed of technical terms and terms relating to modeling and simulation and M&S organizations pertinent to the United States Department of Defense (DoD). In addition to providing a broad listing of terminology and acronyms, the updated document provides a comprehensive bibliographical source of leading archival M&S material, most of which is available to the general public. The DoD M&S Glossary helps promote a uniform language within the DoD M&S community, provides a way for different sections of the DoD M&S community to communicate using the same terms and acronyms, and supplies a list of sources that contain relevant and current M&S information, and material. The process of updating the original 1998 glossary was comprehensive, and involved inputs from many M&S organizations, thus providing accurate and current information. Reviews of early drafts were coordinated through the M&S CO and were made available through the DoD Techipedia website and the Simulation Interoperability Standards Organization's (SISO) Simulation Interoperability Workshop (SIW). Through these channels, the drafts were examined and critiqued by a multitude of reviewers. The document has been cross coordinated with other DoD glossaries (e.g., DoD Joint Publication 1-02, DoD Dictionary of Military and Associated Terms) as well as other related documents (e.g., NATO, IEEE standards, and Society for Modeling and Simulation International(SCS)) for completeness. This paper describes the philosophy and process undertaken to conduct this update, as well as the organization and potential usage of the updated glossary.
