Title

Fire Retardancy Of Carbon Nanof Iber Sheet In Composite Laminates

Abstract

In this work, the flammability of laminated composites made of polyester resin, glass fiber and carbon nanofiber sheet (CNFS) was studied. The CNFS was fabricated using a high-pressure filtration system. The sheet was coated onto the surface of laminated composites through the vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) process. The flammability of the laminated composites was evaluated with cone calorimeter tests under an external radiant heat flux of 50 kW/m2. It was found that the average heat release rate (HRR) of the CNFS-coated laminates was lower, but the peak heat release rate (PHRR) was slightly higher than that of glass fiber/polyester laminates. The CNFS acted as an insulator and mass transport barrier and therefore reduced the flammability of the laminates. Their residues, after the cone calorimeter test, were examined with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results show that the thickness of the CNFS increased by 2.8 times after cone calorimeter tests due to the char formation on t e CNFS.
