Title
Exploring The Level Of Service And Traffic Safety Relationship At Signalized Intersections
Abstract
A study has been conducted to understand the level of service (LOS) and traffic safety relationship and the impact of traffic congestion on the crash occurrence at signalized intersections. Google Earth tool has been used to access the actual geographic location of each signalized intersection, to refine the details on the most relevant design features and to determine additional intersection parameters. The study used signal timing data corresponding only to regular weekdays, since traffic safety conditions differ considerably over the weekend. The flash patterns were not considered, since not all intersections in the sample had a flashing pattern. Vehicle-related accident data were downloaded from the Crash Analysis Reporting (CAR) system, a database maintained by the Florida Department of Transportation's (FDOT) Safety Office containing detailed information from reported crash events across the state.
