Acceptance And Commitment Therapy Case Formulation

Abstract

Given recent reports of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) in the treatment of psychosis there is increasing interest in functional contextual approaches to understanding and conceptualising psychotic disorders. This chapter illustrates the ACT model of psychopathology as it applies to people with psychotic disorders using a lengthy case study. A second case study illustrates the process of case formulation using the inflexahex model and focuses more on the process rather than the content of case formulation. It should be clear that the core processes involved in both the ACT model of psychopathology and the ACT model of treatment are intertwined. A thorough initial case formulation made with regard to the core ACT processes and the ACT model of psychopathology will enhance the clinician's ability to develop a treatment plan that can, if followed, increase the psychological flexibility and vitality of even the most severely ill. © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
