Keywords

Abstract

The goal of interprofessional education is to have health profession students deliberatively working together to learn from one another, about one another and with one another. This paper details one university's experience traveling to the Dominican Republic with a group of nursing and medical students to care for patients in some of the most impoverished areas in the country. The goal of the mission was to deliver quality patient care. This could only be realized with teamwork. Using the concept of knowledge, skills and attitudes, the author will explore how the group of students and healthcare providers came together to efficiently see more than 800 patients in 6 days. Additionally, the students experienced shared learning firsthand by working as a team, resolving conflicts and problem solving. © 2013 Informa UK, Ltd.
