Title

Are Procedural Justice And Distributive Justice Conceptually Distinct?

Abstract

In this chapter we address the question ofiohether distributive fairness and procedural fairness are conceptually distinct. We organize the chapter in three parts. First, we argue that the literature supports the conceptual distinction between distributive fairness and procedural fairness. Second, we suggest that underlying the interest in the conceptual status of distributive and procedural fairness is not whether they are conceptually distinct, but how they are related. We suggest that too often researchers ignore the interdependence of these distinct constructs. Finally, we conclude the chapter by suggesting that justice research might be better served by focusing on perceptions of overall fairness and its effect relative to other psychological constructs.
