Title
Building A Bridge To The Stars: Authority, Leadership And Structure
Keywords
Authority patterns; Human survival; Isolation and human societies
Abstract
Mounting a 100 year crewed expedition to another star requires that one think carefully about how relationships within the crew are handled and how authority, organization structure and leadership are established, maintained and adapted during different stages in the expedition's history. The analysis suggests three distinct phases occur depending on whether planet fall has occurred or not. Building flexibility and adaptability into human societies especially isolated ones remains a significant challenge if the exploration-colonization effort is to prosper over the long term. This will be a new society whose margins of survival will be problematic.
