Abstract

This article provides an overview of the history, development and regulations, composition and performance, hopes and hindrances related to the committees in the United States charged with the protection of human subjects in research studies. Often referred to as Ethical Review Committees, Ethical Review Boards, or the Institutional Review Board, the roles of these risk-management committees are explored, with an emphasis on contemporary issues and concerns as well as the power they have in requesting modifications to scientific protocol and in making the ultimate decisions for approval.
