Abstract

We report a new LC with low viscosity and high clearing point (Tc ∼102 °C) for color-sequential projection displays. Using a 1.95-μm mixed-mode twisted nematic cell, the averaged gray-to-gray response time is less than 1 ms, which is ∼3.6× faster than the current state of the art. Such a mixed-mode twisted nematic liquid-crystal-on-silicon can be used for near-to-eye wearable projection displays and head-up displays in vehicles. We report a new liquid crystal with low viscosity and high clearing point (102°C) for color-sequential projection displays. Using a 1.95-μm mixed-mode twisted nematic (MTN) cell, the averaged gray-to-gray response time is <1 ms, which is ∼3.6× faster than the current state of the art. Such an MTN liquid-crystal-on-silicon can be used for near-to-eye wearable projection displays and head-up displays in vehicles.
