Cascading With George
Abstract
George Stegeman was a long-time colleague with whom several of us a CREOL collaborated. In particular, after we obtained some very strange Z-scan results on KTP, at one of our joint weekly group meetings, George mentioned work Jerry Meredith had done on microscopic second-order cascading. We all soon realized that this (when extended to macroscopic materials) explained the bizarre Z-scan behavior and started the field of Second-Order Cascaded Nonlinear Optics. This area is still being investigated for numerous applications.
