Abstract

This paper presents an energy efficiency comparison among a green roof and fiber cement roof using computer simulation. The simulation was performed through the free software EnergyPlus, by the United States of America (USA) Department of Energy. The objective was to obtain thermal loads and power consumption for the two different situations mentioned. Initially the program was calibrated to local weather conditions, with the aid of a prototype. Subsequently, the simulation was performed based on the popular home model (2E) by city of Rio de Janeiro, in order to compare the two types of roof. It was found that the consumption of electricity was higher in the green roof than the fiber cement roof. This fact was justified by the greater sunlight on the walls of the residence and because the green roof display features higher thermal damping, increasing thus their consumption of electricity. Therefore, it was concluded that the green roof is advantageous over cement roof when the percentage of sunlight is mostly directly applied on the roof and not on the sides of the house walls.
