Abstract
The unique channel characteristics of Underwater Wireless Sensor Network (UWSN) pose various challenges which include but are not limited to energy constraints and harsh dynamic environment. The dynamic environment results into packet collisions and packet losses at MAC layer that lead to waste of vital energy resources. In order to counter these challenges, we propose a Receiver-Initiated MAC based on Energy-efficient Duty cycling called RIED-MAC. In RIED-MAC, while the receiver node is asleep, sender nodes wake up and based on the level of residual energy, take on the role of Responsible Wakeup Node (RWN). RWN builds a Schedule Table (ST) of senders next wake-up times. When receiver node wakes-up it collects senders data packets based on ST. Simulation results show that the proposed RIED-MAC outperforms the ES-MAC scheme on various network parameters like energy consumption rate.
