Abstract
In recent years, the concept of parity-time symmetry has significantly reshaped our understanding of how the incorporation of gain and/or loss in a system can be used to control the transport and localization of light. In what follows, we first provide a mathematical description of parity-time symmetry both within the framework of quantum mechanics and optics. We will then continue by presenting an overview of some of the current developments that are taking place in the field, while considering possibilities that lie ahead.
