Project Objective
This study aims to analyze possible factors that can affect perceptions towards adherence of clinical practice guidelines for low back pain treatment of current and past physical therapy students. An original survey was created to measure demographics, current knowledge of guidelines, influential resources, and perceptions about adherence to these guidelines.
Project Abstract, Summary, or Creative Statement
Low back pain is one of the most common and most costly conditions treated by physical therapists. With variations in treatment, clinical practice guidelines have been proposed to standardize care in order to improve treatment outcomes. Adherence to clinical practice guidelines can be influenced by a physical therapist's knowledge and perception of practice guidelines, or clinical experiences with low back pain treatments. This study seeks to analyze what factors can greatly influence the perceptions of current and past physical therapy students towards adherence to clinical practice guidelines for low back pain treatment. In the month of February 2016, an e-mail survey was distributed to current and past students of the UCF physical therapy program. The survey is original and consists of multiple selection questions, as well as statement evaluation questions. These questions intend to gather information on factors that can affect the perceptions of adherence to clinical practice guidelines for low back pain treatment. The survey will analyze factors that influence adherence to practice guidelines for low back pain. The factors being assessed include demographics, current knowledge of practice guidelines, perceptions of practice guidelines, and what resources can affect adherence to practice guidelines. After analysis, the factors that seem to mostly affect adherence to clinical practice guidelines for low back pain treatment will be apparent. This will lead to further discussion on how to address discrepancies in adherence to clinical practice guidelines for low back pain treatment in order to enhance patient outcomes.
