Description
Man is organic. He derives from nature. Yet, he tries to manipulate it, to conquer it, to own it, and to even buy and trade it. It is inherent in man as a species and as a method of growth for the species, to take what is given or found as in nature, and to change it to fit man’s needs. It is in this spirit that I created my artist’s book; taking found books which deal with nature and the world around us, and repurposing those books with my own ideas. These thoughts critique the true nature of man dealing with his follies, foibles, and character flaws and how they contrast or relate to simple or everyday instances and occurrences in the wild, despite having more complex societal, political, and economical connotations. After scanning the original books and imagery, those found books (including covers) were turned into paper pulp and reformed/recycled into new pages of paper. These new pages were used to print my new book along with various other repurposed items including old book cover boards, fabric material, and even the stick used to slap pained leaves onto the book’s cover. Thus is the true nature of man: To take, destroy, and fulfill his own needs.
