Description

Artist statement:

The idea for this project came to me upon thinking about my future at Rollins College and whether that future would take me elsewhere. When discussing study abroad programs, I constantly hear the sentiment that every student should study abroad – and that you’ll regret it if you don’t. But thinking about the cost of long-term international travel – both financial and psychological – I began to wonder whether I would come to regret it even if I did. I am often stuck in this cycle of regret – or, rather, the fear of it. When I choose not to do something or to pass up an opportunity, I often come to regret it. But in order to avoid that regret, I sometimes agree to things and enter situations which I regret just as much or sometimes more. The structure of this accordion book models this cycle of regret, akin to two sides of the same coin. Flipping the accordion book reveals the other side. There is regret either way: “You’ll regret it if you don’t/ You’ll regret it if you do.” The title, letterpress printed on both handmade cover pages and meant to be read regardless of which direction the book is flipped represents the inescapability of regret: “Either/or.” You’ll regret it EITHER way. You’ll regret it if you OR if you don’t. The gray color scheme and clouded pattern of the interior monotype prints reflects the inner psychological turmoil that comes with attempting to make a decision when you fear that regret is inevitable regardless of what decision you land on.
