Artist Statement:
Western Tattoos/Eastern Binding is a tribute to my love of tattooing, and my appreciation for my mentor, Michael Becker, who also happens to be my husband. The binding of the book and style of tattoos are from different regions, but both regions have a deep history of tattooing. I used the combination of western tattoos and the eastern binding as an analogy of the way our knowledge accumulates through many channels. The paintings are watercolor tattoo “flash” (pre-drawn images meant to be tattooed over and over) by Michael Becker, appropriated in the style of traditional western tattooing. The color palette consists of only black, blue, red, yellow, green and brown, as those were the available colors used in American Traditional tattooing. The green bookcloth is another nod to this traditional tattoo color palette.
