Description
Artist Statement:
This piece is a compilation of a few of the animals found in nature that go through the process of changing their sex for various reasons, known as hermaphroditism. My intent with this is to show the instances in which transitions from one gender to another, or experiencing multiple, or no genders, is seen in nature beyond just humans. The animals I selected were a sea star, an earthworm, a hawkfish, and slipper snails because they all experience their hermaphroditism in different ways, and this is to also reference the different ways a person can engage with their own gender. For the books form, I picked the blizzard pocket technique book form. With the pocketbook, I made thick cards of the different animals to fit into the pockets that have text via letterpress on the back. There is also letterpress text for the title, colophon, and on the individual pockets. On the cards the text state the way the portrayed animal transitions in a dark teal ink that matches the ink on the title and colophon. For this project I went through numerous tests to get final results that I liked, and I found that research was imperative as I wanted to be accurate with facts I was sharing.
