Description
Artist Statement:
“Death Lifts Us” is a sculptural book inspired by the verses and imagery of Franz Wright’s poem, “Empty Cathedal” from his collection “The Beforelife”. I aimed to capture the dance between absence and perception of presence, pushing the narrative how death is a force that’s unpreventable. The sculpture takes the appearance of a cathedral with each page being a different layer of spires, representing the stages of life. The physical form of a cathedral is seen as the heart of a community and spirituality. Despite this, they’re also seen as large and imposing artworks of architecture that invoke the feelings of isolation and anxiety. Through this work, I sought to explore the duality of comfort and the emptiness of human experience that eventually leads to death.
