In 1534 Spanish Town, the capital of Saint Catherine, Jamaica was founded, becoming the oldest continuously inhabited city in Jamaica. The city was once known as Santo Jago de la Vega (Saint James of the Plain) and is built on the West Bank of the Rio Cobre. In the image is an excavation site with a brick foundation.
