Photo Description
As of 2013, Caneel Bay Resort which consists of 150 acres was leased to Rosewood Hotels by the United States National Park Service (NPS). The land was originally owned by Laurance Rockefeller and is located within the Virgin Islands National Park (VINP) on Saint John, United States Virgin Islands. Rockefeller purchased much of the land near the northwest side of the island and later deeded the resort and over 5,000 acres of land to Jackson Hole Preserve, his family trust. In accordance with Rockefeller’s wishes Jackson Hole Preserve deeded the land and later the resort to the United States government in order to create a nature preserve. The VINP which encompasses more than 7,000 acres (more than half of Saint John) is run by the NPS. Caneel Bay contains the remains from some of the former sugar estate’s buildings. Rockefeller constructed the resort property to blend into its surrounding landscape. This image shows the ruins of the sugar estate building, coconut trees, and tourists lying in a hammock. Slide labeled St Johns Preserved Ruins Caneel Bay.
