    In 1765, the Saint Vincent Botanic Gardens were established in the West Indies and is believed to be the first botanical gardens in the Western Hemisphere. General Robert Melville, Governor of the Windward Islands, and George Young, a British military surgeon, worked together to established the gardens installing Young as the gardens’ first superintendent. This image shows a walking path in the Saint Vincent Botanic Gardens leading to the Grenadine House, a nearby hotel. Grenadine House was built in 1765. The path is lined with variegated hibiscuses and a man is walking on the path. Palm trees are also growing in the gardens.
