Description

A black and white image of male students working in a classroom at Bethune-Cookman University. The students are participating in a broom-making class, which was part of the Boys Industries, or vocational training, offered by the school. The two men at the right are dressed in long-sleeved shirts, ties, and pants, and they are making straw baskets. To the right of them are two more men who have attached the straw to a broom handle and now are combing the straw. To the right of them are two more men who are using a pressing machine to press the straw together. A man standing behind the two men combing the straw is also pressing the straw with a machine. Throughout the room are examples of furniture where straw has been inlaid by the class. In the background of the image, completed brooms can be seen leaning up against a wall. A lamp sits on top of a shelf at the left of the image. On the back of the photograph is written, "Boys Industries, Bethune COokman College, class in broom-making." The photographer of the image is unknown.
