Description

In July-August, 1969, Rev. John Kucharik and congregation chairman, Andrew Duda, Jr. attended the Bethel Bible Series seminar in Madison, WI. Both returned with glowing reports and a zeal for implementing this adult Bible training at St. Luke's. As Pastor Kucharik stated in a letter to the congregation the next month: "Our first need is to find 5 men and 5 women who will be willing to undergo an intensive, disciplined teacher training program over the next two years." The requirements he then listed were admittedly "rigid and daunting." Yet a number of faithful St. Luke's members rose to the challenge and submitted to the rigorous and time-consuming training. By January, 1970, training classes for these first candidates were underway each week. The chancel photo here is undated and may have been taken in October, 1971, when the following teachers completed their two-year training (left to right): Anna Mikler Duda, Gertrude Lukas, Pastor John Kucharik, Jennie Stanko Cotton, Andrew Duda, Jr., Virginia Balkcom Mikler, Jon Davis, Dick Sawyer. Sixty members of the congregation were enrolled in classes that same month, with a similar amount enrolled for spring classes the following year. The Bethel Bible Series classes continue to educate and inspire St. Luke's members more than thirty years after the launching of the program.
