Description

Many of Slavia's Founding Families became actively involved in the establishment and sustenance of the Lutheran Haven. One family made the gift of land for the Haven's future campus; several families made monetary donations (and continue to support the ministry more than 60 years later). Some played active roles in caring for the residents and brightening their lives with gifts and visits. Some of the oldest members of Slavia's first families have, themselves, become residents of the Retirement Center or received care at the Lutheran Haven Nursing Home. Juliana Stanko, who with her husband, Martin, operated the Slavia "general store" (est. 1926) was cared for by the skilled nurses at the Lutheran Haven during her final years. Anna Mikler Duda chaired the St. Luke's Women's Missionary Guild, which provided gifts to the residents of the Old Folks Home for their birthdays and at Christmas. Mary Stanko Fabry shared her time and talents by preparing food in the Haven kitchens. The Lutheran Haven, though a separate entity from St. Luke's Church, has been an important ministry of the congregation since its inception.
