Abstract
The Curaçao North Sea Jazz Festival (CNSJF) has established itself as a significant international event, attracting 6,232 attendees worldwide, significantly boosting the island’s tourism and cultural profile. Notably, 78.9% of attendees, or 4,917 "Festival-Passion Tourists," traveled to Curaçao specifically for the festival. These tourists were affluent and well-educated, primarily from the Netherlands, USA, Venezuela, Colombia, Aruba, and Suriname. Despite ongoing challenges with accessibility, particularly from Aruba, the festival strengthened perceptions of Curaçao as a destination, as evidenced by many visitors expressing intentions to return.[1] Held at the World Trade Center in Curaçao from August 29 through August 31, 2024, this tenth edition of the CNSJF featured an exciting lineup. The festival offered a special promotion, including free admission to the Thursday night (August 29) performance featuring Afro 23, Leoni Torres, and Chic. The main performances on Friday and Saturday included 14 top-tier artists, such as Juan Luis Guerra, Marc Anthony, Gladys Knight, Joss Stone, Steal, Jennifer Hudson, Eros Ramazzotti, and Maluma. The festival analysis reveals a strong connection between festival attendees and the island. Survey results show that 84.1% of attendees considered the CNSJF a highly significant and emotionally resonant experience, with 42.7% rating their satisfaction at the highest level. Similarly, 87.5% of attendees had favorable impressions of Curaçao, with 44.1% giving the island top marks. Over 80% of attendees reported feeling deeply connected to the festival and Curaçao. Economically, the festival’s impact is substantial. Festival-Passion Tourists spent an average of $1,854.95 per trip, contributing significantly to the local economy. Direct spending related to the festival exceeded $9 million, with indirect benefits adding another $5 million, bringing the total economic contribution to approximately $14.2 million. Additionally, 84% of attendees expressed a desire to return to Curaçao and recommend the island to others, highlighting the CNSJF’s role as a critical cultural event and a major economic engine, enhancing Curaçao’s global reputation and benefiting the local community.
