Abstract

Within most traditional theme park attractions, guest interaction does not directly impact the unfolding of the narrative. While there are many examples of encouraged interaction, guests still lack agency. Within this research, the goal is to develop a hypothetical theme park attraction (titled The Library of Worlds) where guests will be met with various choices that influence the trajectory of the story. Drawing inspiration from non-linear storytelling and interactive gaming, this study explores integration of choice-based narratives into themed entertainment, questioning the ways in which agency can enhance immersion and connection within attractions – as well as what elements allow guests to feel the impact of their choice during an experience. The primary objective in answering this design question is to explore how attractions can become even more interactive and compelling than current theme park offerings.

Case studies, including Disney’s Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser and Universal’s Super Nintendo World, along with analyses of choice-based gaming inform the design process, aiming to replicate those methods of immersive storytelling and playability on an accessible scale within a single theme park attraction. These case studies aim to inform how immersion, environment, special effects, and game design elements can blend to create higher levels of interactivity in theme park attractions.

This research seeks to develop an example of a more interactive and exploratory theme park experience, enhancing guest engagement and connection to the narratives encountered. Ultimately, it aims to push the boundaries of themed entertainment by offering a design concept where guests can harbor a deeper connection with the story that they are experiencing, making them feel as if they truly have an impact on the narrative that is unfolding around them.
