Abstract
The purpose of this creative project was to research adequate educational practices regarding implementing technology and specifically CAI (Computer-Assisted Instruction) technology in the context of elementary education. This information was compiled into distinct categories based on research articles and policy statements. Then, the implications of each category were explored within the classroom. From this review of research, I created a criteria set for elementary educators to follow to evaluate CAI in the framework of their own educational methods and classroom. This thesis presents an address on the issue of student engagement in elementary literacy classrooms by assisting students in actively participating in reading education while not actively being taught by the educator, but through CAI. Currently, this criteria set is presented in a binary format of Yes or No questions. The categories of the criteria set were determined by the research sections in the literature review, and they were built upon further by implementing that information into two tables that made up the criteria set: evaluative criteria of CAI, as well as motivation and engagement in the classroom. This honors thesis project found that the research could build a solid base in terms of criteria for teachers to use to determine the adequacy and usability of CAI in the context of their classroom. Yet, significantly more research should follow to create a more in-depth criteria set.
