    Photo Description

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. Television transmission today depicts Apollo 9 astronauts James A. McDivitt, foreground, and Russell L. Schweickart standing in their lunar module spacecraft, orbiting 300 miles above the United States mainland. This pass was made during the space pilots' 22nd hour in Earth orbit while the lunar module was docked to the command module flown by David R. Scott. McDivitt and Schweickart had transferred from the command module through a tunnel to the lunar module to test the two-man craft, similar to the one that is to land Americans on the Moon later this year. At the completion of their checkout, McDivitt and Schweickart returned to the command module. They were launched on the planned 10-day flight by an Apollo/Saturn V space vehicle from the Kennedy Space Center at 11 a.m., EST, March 3, 1969. (The transmission was received at the Manned Space Flight Network Tracking Station at the Kennedy Space Center.)
