Mariner 6 Photograph of the Martian Equator

    Keywords

Aeronautics, Cydonia, John F. Kennedy Space Center, Mariner 6, Mars, Meridiani Sinus, NASA, Sabaeus Sinus, South Polar Cap

    Photo Description

This picture shows the equatorial region which will be covered in the near encounter phase of the Mariner VI pass. Meridiani Sinus and Sabaeus Sinus compose the prominent dark feature parallel to the equator in the right-hand part of the photograph. The bright area at the top is Cydonia. The irregularity of the edge of the south polar cap could be due to topographic relief. The six small, very dark spots on the face of the planet are reference points in the focal plane of the camera.
