Photo Description
This is the last of the fully received far-encounter TV photographs from Mariner 6, taken 126,500 miles from Mars, roughly half the distance between the Earth and Moon. Even in this unprocessed form, this is the most detailed and largest-scale photograph ever made of this part of Mars. The path of Mariner 6 at closest approach passes from west to east across the middle of this photo. However, the eastern half of the area shown will be blanketed by night. The dark horizontal band in the west half of this photograph is Sabaeus Sinus, which gives way to the north with a relatively sharp edge to the large bright area Aeria. The large circular light area in the lower right is the famous "desert" Hellas, 950 miles in diameter. Faint circular patterns discernible to an experienced eye in various parts of this photograph may be craters. The small white spots and rectangular dark and light streaks are artifacts of the TV and electronic system, many of which will be eliminated by future processing. The evenly spaced small solid black dots are a grid of reference points in the focal plane of the camera.
