Photo Description
The large quasi-circular bright region, Elysium, just above the center of the disk, shows a detailed bright structure whose appearance varies as Mars rotates ahead of the spacecraft. Two types of boundaries between dark and light areas appear. The edges of the club-shaped dark region, Cerberus, just below Elysium, are well defined. The northern boundary of Mare Cimmerium below it exhibits a blotchy structure, suggestive of heavy cratering. An array of black reference dots appears on the surface.
