Photo Description

This Mars picture by Mariner 7 is the second of three wide-angle views of the Hellespontus and Hellas regions. The structure in the left appears to be a series of ridges and escarpments separating the dark Hellespontus area to the west (right) from Hellas. Two large gray dots in the lower right-hand quadrant are due to defects on the vidicon tube. This view, taken with a green filter, has large-scale variations in albedo (surface reflectivity) suppressed by the camera electronics, but these variations will be restored by further computer processing of the data. The picture covers a region of approximately 400 by 550 statute miles.
