    Photo Description

This view of the Triplet Craters, located at center under scale, was photographed from a television monitor in the lunar module simulator at the Kennedy Space Center. It is the same view Alan B. Shepard, Jr., will see during a nominal descent to the planned landing site in the Moon's Fra Mauro region. Shepard will descend in the lunar module with Edgar D. Mitchell while Stuart A. Roosa pilots the Command Module in lunar orbit. This view was photographed at a simulated altitude of 3,000 feet at a 16-degree flight path angle and a 10-degree sun elevation angle. The three Triplet craters, known as North, Middle and South, are clearly visible at center under the Landing Point Designator, the scale which helps the crew pinpoint their landing site. The craters Cone, Doublet and Triplet are the three primary formations Astronauts Shepard and Mitchell will see on their planned landing trajectory to the Fra Mauro region.
