    Terrestrial Crystal Samples for Vapor Growth of II-VI Compounds

    This photograph shows crystals of the compound semiconductor material germanium selenide which have been grown on Earth. These crystals are primarily dendritic (non-single crystal) growth with an occasional crystal platelet. (Each square in the photograph is 1 mm.) Crystals such as these are being compared with crystals grown on Skylab as part of the M556 Experiment, Vapor Growth of II-VI Compounds. The Skylab samples have shown crystalline properties resulting in very straight growth edges and a complete absence of dendrites. The Principal Investigator for this experiment is Dr. Harry Wiedemeier of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
