    Photo Description

MARSHALL SPACE FLIGHT CENTER, ALA. This photograph was taken during the Skylab 3 mission by the Apollo Telescope Mount Hydrogen Alpha #1 telescope on Sept. 5, 1973, at 18:27:00 GMT. It shows a particularly large sunspot and surge of gas from an active region being studied through the ATM experiments. Several other active regions with smaller sunspots can also be seen. The level of activity seen here is most unusual for this period in the 11-year solar cycle when very little solar activity would be expected. The crosshairs indicate the precise photographic target sought by the astronaut while instruments from other experiments on ATM gather ultraviolet solar data. The Hydrogen Alpha telescope also provides a partial television image to the astronaut for ATM instrument operation. Recovered film provides a permanent photographic record. Dr. Reeves of the Harvard College Observatory is principal investigator.
