    Single Crystal Produced Using Skylab's Multipurpose Electric Furnace

    This photograph shows a single crystal of a semiconductor material, Indium-Antimonide, formed on Skylab as part of Experiment M560, Growth of Spherical Crystals. This is one of the series of experiments using Skylab's Multipurpose Electric Furnace developed by the Marshall Space Flight Center. This sample was heated until molten and then allowed to cool and solidify. A sphere was not formed because of different wetting properties in zero gravity than anticipated. The tip did not release from its container wall. However, the crystal surface is extremely smooth and homogeneous. Under gravity conditions, it is not possible to produce single crystals of similar perfection. The Principal Investigator for the Growth of Spherical Crystals Experiment is Dr. Hans Walter of the University of Alabama in Huntsville.
