    Theophanu was a Byzantine princess who married Emperor Otto II. She was a political force within his kingdom during his lifetime and became even more powerful after his death, when she ruled as regent for their son Otto III. This letter was addressed to her from her sister-in-law, Emma, who was being held hostage.
