A moving map cockpit display for computer graphics-based flight simulator

Abstract

Recent advances in computer graphics display technology allow the creation of a variety of sophisticated interactive display to direct an aircraft to precise parameter values and coordinates in space. One application is a graphical cockpit display which presents navigation information on the PC screen in pictorial format -- moving map. In this paper, we present a computer graphics-based software package which generates a Moving Map on a computer monitor. Interactive strategies, menu sequences and direct map selection have been employed during the design of the Moving Map. The Moving Map is so called because the aircraft is depicted as a fixed point on the screen, while the map image moves beneath it. As a visual aid, the Moving Map is capable of presenting the position of a airplane relative to the locations of the airport, navigational aids, and terrain, and it gives a topdown view of aircraft's movement in much the same way as the view of the ground moves in the scope of the real world.
