The Development of the Real Time Software, Data Base, and Data Editing Tool for the Computer Image Generator Associated with a Driver Training Simulator

Abstract

This report documents the work that was performed for the Driver Training Simulator project. The Driver Training Simulator is a low cost tool designed to train and evaluate the skills of automobile operators. For this project, a computer image generation system was developed using an IBM PC/AT with the XTAR graphics processing system. Software was developed that receives information from a host computer and updates the graphics processing system in real time. In addition to the real time software, a proof-of-concept data base was developed to demonstrate the capabilities of the image generation system. This data base contains flat terrain that exhibit a series of curves and intersections. Also, 3-dimensional objects such as road signs and houses are spread throughout the data base. The Interactive Data Base Editor was developed to facilitate designing and debugging of data bases. This editor allows the data base modeler to traverse a data base using the computer keyboard. In addition, the data base modeler can modify the colors in the data base in real time.
