An analysis of the perceptions of principals, superintendents and board members in Florida towards year-round education

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine perceptions of principals, superintendents and board members in the state of Florida toward the issue of year-round education. The instrument used to collect data consisted of 28 statements and 10 questions which was distributed or mailed to 2,427 educators and board members in the 67 counties in the state. The sample included 2,009 principals, 67 superintendents and 351 board members. Usable responses were received from 1,239 respondents. Each of the responses to the 18 statements was evaluated in terms of eight demographic variables; responses to the 10 questions were tabulated and analyzed in accordance with their percentage distribution. The overwhelming majority of all groups indicated that yearround education was acceptable to them. Most educators and board members felt that all personnel who were impacted by the concept should be allowed to participate in the formulation of the calendar and other details. The most popular strategy selected for implementing year-round education was the "45-15 11 plan and the "traditional" plan; the least favored strategy was the "double-session" plan. . . . l.l.l. Although all groups favored using bond issues to build facilities for new enrollment growth, over 48% still would consider year-round schools as a viable option. Despite the fact that some concerns were expressed about the issue, results of this study suggest that agreement exists among the composite perceptions of principals, superintendents and board members in the state of Florida with regard to the concept of year-round education .
