Failure detection and prediction of paper mill rubber covered rolls

Abstract

Paper Mills use rubber covered steel rolls in the paper drying process. Often the rubber cover gets unbonded from the base and causes the paper machine to wreck. A failure detection and prediction system for the rubber covered rolls was sought as there is no standard method or system available in the industry at the moment. The rubber cover failure theory was developed after a research on the vibration data and spectra of seven actual paper mill rubber covered roll failures. This theory was then verified in a simulated paper mill run in the research and development facility using two specially designed rolls. One with a known perfect cover and the other with a rubber cover defect. An On-Line system was put together which continuously monitor these rolls and sends out alarm messages whenever any of the predefined vibration thresholds are violated. It is believed that this system will prevent any further paper machine wrecks from happening as a result of the rubber cover failure. This system will save us about $170,000.00 for each paper machine wreck avoided.
