Application of Expert Systems to the Materials Handling Problem
Abstract
The task of selecting Material Handling Equipment for production systems is a difficult one for Industrial Engineers (IE). An I.E. has to analyze large quantities of data and review a variety of material handling equipment before making a decision. An expert system based on the material handling equation, MATERIAL+ MOVE= METHOD (EQUIPMENT) has been developed to address this problem. The equation is solved using rules developed to handle relationships between elements and factors of the equation. The system is based on a PC expert systems shell (Level 5 package). Enhancement features were added to the package to graphically represent the selected handling equipment: conveyors, cranes and hoists, and industrial trucks. A logical extension to the system is to add a component which directs the user to the proper vendor.
