A comparison study of the treatment of the topic of world war II atrocities committed by nazis and Japanese in secondary world history textbooks of Japan, the republic of China and the United States

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to compare the treatment of the topic of World War II atrocities committed by Nazis and Japanese in three countries' secondary world history textbooks. The three countries chosen for the study were Japan, the Republic of China, Taiwan, and the United States. This study was qualitative and descriptive based on data collected from the three textbooks. Textbook analysis techniques were used. First, it was ascertained whether the topic of World War II atrocities was included in each textbook. Next, the depth of the coverage of the topic of World War II atrocities was measured using word count. Third, emotional tone of this textbooks which included the topic was measured using a pre-determined word list and counting the number of times an emotional word was present.

The study showed that the Japanese secondary world history textbook did not mention atrocities of any kind. Further, the study showed that the United States book had the greatest depth and emotional tone used on the Nazi atrocities but no inclusion at all of Japanese atrocities. The Chinese textbook had the greatest coverage of Japanese atrocities and emotional words for the Japanese atrocities. The Nazis atrocities were not included in the Chinese textbook at all.
