A study to ascertain the need to market the medical record profession

Abstract

A promotional effort must be made by Medical Record Administrators and Medical Record Technicians to assist in the education of other health care practitioners and of society in general. This effort should be performed both by individual practitioners and by the professional organization. If this effort is effective, medical record practitioners will be recognized for the vital role they play in health care. Eventually they will obtain and maintain professional status. This study addresses the issues of the perceived need for marketing/promoting the medical record profession from the Medical Record Directors' viewpoint. The population of this study was all of the hospital Medical Record Department Directors in the state of Florida. The sample consisted of Directors in all the hospitals located in Orlando, Tampa, Jacksonville, Tallahassee, and Miami and a random selection of those working in hospitals in the surrounding areas. A questionnaire was developed and utilized to provide descriptive data. The results supported the hypothesis of the author that a majority of Medical Record practitioners in the state of Florida believe there is a need to market the medical record profession.
