An investigation of the impact of high and low counseling skills on client outcome

Abstract
Improving the level of client outcome is seen as an important role of counselor educators; for that reason, this study investigated the impact of high and low counseling skills on client outcome and the impact of treatment on client outcome. The study rated counseling skills through the Global Scale for Rating Helper responses developed by George M. Gazda. Rating was possible by videotaping 42 counseling sessions, and then scoring client outcome through the Outcome Questionnaire (OQ-45). Forty-two counseling students at the University of Central Florida (UCF), who were completing their practicum class (MHS 6803), participated in order to rate counseling skills. Each counseling student counseled several clients per semester at the UCF Community Counseling Clinic and each session was videotaped; however, only one session per student was utilized in order to rate counseling skills. Each client was administered the OQ-45 twice during the length of treatment; the first OQ-45 was given at the beginning of treatment, and the last OQ-45 was given at the end of treatment. Results did not reveal an impact of high and low counseling skills on client outcome. It appears that the level of counseling skills in this study did not indicate a decrease in the level of client symptomatic distress, interpersonal problems, and social role dysfunction. Counseling itself did demonstrate to be beneficial to the clients of this study. Many factors can contribute to these results, and so further research is suggested.
